Rancho Fino Trainer - Jose (Jochi) E. Rodriguez

Jochi was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico. His passion for Paso Finos began at the young age of 11 years old when he started helping Cunda Figueroa, of the Puerto Rican Paso Fino Hall of Fame. For the next 6 years, Jochi spent every moment he could working with the horses. He began competing professionally at age 18.

While in Puerto Rico, he also worked with the Pastrana and Mimoso’s families, who were known as Certified Judges of Pasos in Puerto Rico. At age 21, he became head trainer at Rancho Palo Alto in the Dominican Republic and stayed there for 10 years. In 1985, Jochi won the World Cup with a 3-year old colt in Puerto Rico. Jochi won many championships while living in the Dominican Republic-Santo Domingo.

Jochi and his family moved to Florida in 1991. While in Florida Jochi worked for Tigodee Farms and also with Edgar Ortiz at United Paso Fino. In 1994 he bought 7 acres and started Alligaby Farm, in Anthony, Florida. At the end of 1996, Jochi met Jim Sievers from Flying M Ranch in Montana, who offered him a job as Head Trainer and manager for Flying M Ranch. While in Montana, Jochi attended many of the top horsemanship clinics. He refined his training and horsemanship techniques with Buck Branman and Chris Cox. In 1998 Bob and Betty Rains came to the Flying M looking for pleasure and trail horses, and purchased 4 horses. Little did the Rains’ know that in 9 years Jochi would their head trainer at Rancho Fino in California.

Jochi Rodriguez with a new horse in trainingWhile at Flying M Ranch, Jochi traveled with a horse by the name of Ingeniero, to Cali, Colombia to compete in the World Cup Performance (3-year-old Stallions). Ingeniero won the class and also won Grand World Champion.

In 1999, Jochi and Ingeniero went to Tampa, Florida to compete in the World Cup, this time in the Pleasure Stallion class. Jochi and Ingeniero did it again and won the Pleasure Grand World Championship.

In 2001 Jochi was invited to give some clinics for La Luisa, which is one of the biggest Paso Fino farms in Colombia. His clinic there lasted for 45 days instead of the 15 days originally agreed upon and involved 17 trainers. After this clinic, he went to do more clinics at La Virginia Farm, in Cali, Colombia. In 2002 he gave clinics and worked at : La Loma, La Vitrina, Criadero J.S, El Viento, to name a few.

Jochi and Bob Rains met at the Grand Prix in Tampa, Florida in November 2006, while Jochi was working at one of the most prestigious facilities in Ocala, Florida: United Paso Fino – owned by Edgar and Ali Ortiz. It was in Tampa that Bob and Jochi discussed the potential of the California market and of working together at Rancho Fino.

In January 2007, Jochi moved to California and became the head trainer for Rancho Fino. Over the past 7 months Jochi has won many championships and has demonstrated his horsemanship abilities to many Paso Fino owners.

The best is yet to come at Rancho Fino with the Paso Fino breed… Jochi would like to accomplish many of his goals at Rancho Fino. These include:

  • Establishing clinics designed for amateurs and professionals. These clinics would allow more people to manage and train their horses, and to compete in the show ring.

  • Breed and train so that California horses can compete on a national and international basis.

  • Develop video training so more people can learn true gentle training techniques. The first video is now available (see “training video” above).
